There is almost always a correlation between a nations cultural life, its history and language, and what it considers of value as a commodity, be it beautiful fashion or good food. At the last round of shows, in February, I summed up the fall collections as an eternity of bad clothes. Six months earlier, talking to Italian industry leaders and designers, I sensed a struggle to remain relevant as a manufacturing base in the face of competition (and cheap labor) outside? Italy. A serious depth and confidence?are missing, and Ive wondered: is that?related to the TV-and-scandal culture of Silvio Berlusconi?

Today, on Italian Vogues blog, the magazines editor in chief, Franca Sozzani, had some tough words for Italian journalists and her country in general. She obviously sees a connection.

Our country, the beautiful Italy, the land of writers, poets, architects, museums, admired, loved and renown all over the world, our Italy ?is now full of big trash.

She was referring to gossip-saturated publications. The land of culture and beauty has become the land of ignorance and the ugly. She added: People go to newsstands to buy other peoples business. Good news are given only about their friend designers and businessmen. The rest is kaput.

Ms. Sozzani seems to suggest that the problem is bigger than what appears on the runways.
